In Which I Talk About the Weather Some More

December 23rd, 2004News / Randomness / WeatherComments?

It seems that my hope of not causing a wintery apocalypse was premature. This morning when I went out to my car, I found the driver’s side covered by a nearly impenetrable wall of slush. I know it’s impenetrable (or at least damn hard to move) because I climbed in through the passenger side and attempted to open the driver side from the inside. Though I pushed with all my strength, I suppose I haven’t been spending enough time at the gym, because it didn’t budge. At all.

Defeated, I went back inside and took Bryan’s car to work instead. After work, I’m going to buy a shovel so I can get my car out before the Nearly Impenetrable Wall of Slush becomes the Icy Barricade of Total Devestation.

In conclusion:

Dear Weather Gods,

I also think sunshine and 70 degree days are pretty.

Let It Snow?

December 14th, 2004Randomness / Weather1 Comment

It’s my fault. At least, that’s what Bryan says.

See, the other day, I mentioned that I think snow is pretty. And I think, at least in the abstract, most people would agree with me. You know… winter wonderland and all that. However, when it comes to actually traveling in it and living with it for multiple months, most people tend to get a bit tired of the snow.

Soon after I mentioned that snow is pretty, it started snowing. Since the flakes began falling two days ago, they have only stopped intermittently. During that time I learned the meaning of snow squall and experienced a couple while driving to and from work.

The forecast shows no snow for the next few days though, so I guess my words didn’t bring a wintery apocalypse… yet.

When It Rains…

September 8th, 2004News / Randomness / Weather1 Comment

And it certainly is raining right now. Not only are we getting poured upon by the remnants of Frances, but I’m getting what seems like a downpour of interviews. Today, I had my interview with the consulting firm, and that went awesome. This afternoon, the consulting firm called and said they had a potential placement of a helpdesk job for me, so I have an interview for that on Friday. Then a (different) recruiter called me and said he had a company that would like to interview me next week for a helpdesk job. So after not hearing from anybody for a month, I get two interviews in a week. Yay!

In other news, Bryan is very excited about the new toilet paper.

Let Me Be There When It’s Snowing

Right now, it’s icing outside, and the world is surreal with crystalline beauty. It’s so pretty that I can even forgive the weather’s spoiling of my plans to go hang with my parents for the evening. Instead, I stayed near home and helped make delicious homemade pizza (some of which is sitting in the my fridge waiting to be consumed later). We also watched Waking Life, which I adore. Even though this was my third viewing, I feel like I have yet to absorb its fullness.

This weekend is going to be so damn hot. Ryan, Abigail, and Bryan are coming to town tomorrow and then Saturday them + Courtney + I are going to see OK Go in DC! Hopefully we don’t get iced too badly and everyone can make the trip.

There is excitement, there is ice, and there is need for sleep.

The Stars Still Conspire for Us

January 4th, 2004Introspection / Weather2 Comments

Due to the unseasonably warm weather, I was able to comfortably spend some time on The Hill earlier. It was just me and the moon ("and I’ve got no trouble with that") and the city spread out beneath me. The world was full of peace and comfort, and I stood and drank it in. Tonight, the streetlights were fallen stars and the wind was the breath of god.

Love Don’t Show Up in the Pavement Cracks

Today was a surprisingly nice day for the end of December, with temperatures in the low 60s. With the sun shining, it seemed much too nice not to go for a run. Now, keep in mind that for the past couple months, I have not exactly been keeping up the good running schedule that I do during the summer. I also hadn’t had anything to eat other than a couple pieces of toast. None of this would have been too bad, if it hadn’t been for the wind.

Oh, the wind. The angry, vicious wind. Since I hadn’t run in a while, I forgot that the wind enjoys moving south to north through the valley. The route I chose took me in a loop that went north first, leaving the fight against the wind for the return.

And what a fight it was. I’m not sure how Chicago won the title of the Windy City… obviously we were not in the competition. I did finally make it home, but with some walking (something I despise stopping to do while running).

Once I got home, I felt rather queasy and lightheaded for a while, so I drank loads of water to rehydrate. Eventually I felt better, and I’m glad that I did get out and do something rather than sitting on my butt all day. But I think I’ll stick to inside running until it really starts to get warm.

There’s a Fire

Here’s hoping that work tomorrow is less hectic than the last two days have been. We’ve been in crisis mode from problems with our file servers that keep crashing. It’s just not fun. Even though I do (to some degree) enjoy the adrenaline rush of having to rush around and get tons of stuff done, I can only take so much. I have to give props to OK Go [iTMS link] has helped me stay sane during the craziness. But here’s my message to the servers: stop crashing!

I’m proud of me for finally backing things up. Up until now I haven’t had a backup of the stuff on my PowerBook, except for as much as an iPod counts as a music backup. So now at least I have a slightly more secure backup of my life.

That’s the news here. Oh, and it’s raining a lot. Cold rain and I don’t get along. The rain god better watch his back, that’s all I’m sayin’.

Lodging a Complaint

I thought I ordered tropical weather for my birthday. What’s up with this coldness? Those weather-controlling satellites just aren’t what they used to be.

I don’t recall giving autumn permission to come yet. I’m starting to get worried, because it’s getting a bit cooler, and I’m not quite ready for summer to be over yet. Thinking back, I’m not sure what happened to summer. It went away so fast. I guess summer is always kind of like that though.

Actually, I suppose that after this weekend, fall is allowed to bring the coolness. But not until post-beach. That is an order.

Signs of a Grass Revolt

June 19th, 2003Geeking Out / Mac / Randomness / WeatherComments?

I’m pretty sure that the grass doesn’t want to be cut. Yesterday when I was all ready to mow, it started raining. Then today, the grass had sabotaged the mower. They tell me that the people who live upstairs actually probably broke it, but I don’t believe them. It’s definitely the grass. And I’m scared.

Today I discovered a cool utility for OS X. Ittec gives OS X context menu folder browsing à la BeOS. Only it’s even better than the BeOS Tracker’s menus, because you can actually delete, move, and copy files. It’s pretty cool.

Um, there’s not much else to write about. I’m happy that the new iPod software took care of the clicking between tracks. Yep.

Watch out for the grass, ok?
