Long Distance Call

March 17th, 2007Goodies / Mac / SoftwareComments?

Since we have CallVantage again, I’ve updated CallVantage Dialer. The major new feature is that it actually works again, so that’s pretty fancy. Other changes include storing your username and password in the keychain and better compatibility if Quicksilver isn’t installed. Get it while it’s hot!

A Delicious Revenge

December 6th, 2005Geeking Out / Goodies / MySQLicious / Software4 Comments

Believe it or not, there’s actually a new MySQLicious! However, it’s really pretty much identical to the old MySQLicious. All I’ve done is fixed the $this->$newline bug mentioned by Richard and clarified the licensing, as suggested by Walter. Additionally, the FAQ has been updated.

There seems to be an outstanding bug where sometimes MySQLicious erroneously mirrors all bookmarks instead of those for a selected tag. Then on the next mirroring, it corrects itself. I haven’t done any debugging yet to figure out if this is a del.icio.us issue or a MySQLicious bug.

I’ve also had one report of issues with certain characters that I have yet to reproduce, and I haven’t seen the errors caused by a missing notes field either. Any help in tracking these down would be appreciated.

Oh, and the title of this entry? I was looking for synonyms to “delicious,” and “a delicious revenge” was in the definition. It was far too delicious to pass up.

Rescue Me

When Apple introduced iTunes 4.9, they also introduced a rather annoying bug where a valid MP3 occasionally gets identified as a "QuickTime Movie." The problem comes when you try to sync to your iPod, because iTunes refuses to copy the songs over. iTunes MP3 Rescue to the, um, rescue!

When you launch the program, it will search your iTunes library for MP3 files that are incorrectly identified and repair them. Simple as that. (See below for update).

Many thanks to Cian Walsh of Afterglow Design for the fabulous icon.

2008 Update: I don’t think this is an issue with newer versions of iTunes, but if you’re still having problems, please see this hint and the code here.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dashboard

What would my site be without the somewhat frequent geeky post? Not my site, that’s for sure! Ha ha!

After being grumpy about Apple’s shipping fuckup, I finally got Tiger on monday night. Just to be sure, I did a full backup, formatted, and installed.

Everything went quite smoothly. The biggest nuisance I ran into was when, for some reason, mdimport (the process that indexes files for Spotlight) got locked into some sort of a loop and wouldn’t stop scanning. I let it run for a couple days and it just kept taking up lots of CPU time.

Eventually I gave up hope that it would finish on its own and killed the process. Then I ran sudo mdutil -E / in Terminal to restart the indexing. In about twenty minutes, Spotlight was all ready for use.

For the most part, I haven’t noticed major differences from Panther. Safari 2.0 is even faster than 1.3 was, which of course is nice. I’m still using NetNewsWire for my newsfeeds though… Safari’s RSS doesn’t do it for me. Dashboard is ok, but I haven’t found much use for it beyond the weather.

Overall though, performance is a bit snappier and everything feels a bit nicer. There are of course some bugs to be ironed out, especially with the new Mail (which, by the way, I don’t hate. It’s a tad strange looking, but I don’t think it’s all that bad, except for that bizarre light blue folder list.) Apple’s done a good job and once they get a couple of point updates out, Tiger should solidify. It’s definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

PS - Please forgive me for the title. Sorry about that. Though I am surprised I haven’t seen it used elsewhere.

Just a quick note that MySQLicious 1.1 is out. What’s new? I thought you’d never ask!

  • Fixed an issue with URLs that have single quotes in them.
  • Added the setOutputMode() function to change between command line, html, and silent modes.
  • Dramatically improved error handling and reporting.
  • Various internal improvements.

So grab it and enjoy the deliciousness.

Yummy!

I’ve completely revamped the MySQLicious page and added a tutorial on setting it up from scratch. This should serve to eliminate some of the confusion on how it’s used. In my initial excitement of “here’s this cool tool I wrote!” I overlooked the fact that originally the documentation didn’t do a good job of explaining implementation. I think it’s much better now.

The MySQLicious download has also been updated to include a new file that is a fully working implementation. If you downloaded it before but haven’t gotten around to using it, grab the new download. If you’re already using it, don’t bother, since the actual MySQLicious code hasn’t changed.

PS - If your name is kael and you emailed me about MySQLicious, I tried to reply but you must have mistyped your address because it bounced. The stuff in the tutorial is basically what I would have sent you anyway.

Feed Me, Gmail

March 21st, 2005Geeking Out / Mac / Software7 Comments

I have a GMail account that I use for a few mailing lists and such, but since they don’t support IMAP, I’m not ready to forward my nanovivid.com email addresses there. Since I don’t get much mail there, I never remember to check it and I need a way to be notified of new messages.

After realizing yesterday that gCount was taking up over 60 megs of memory (a bit much for a simple mail checker), I decided to find another way to get GMail new mail notifications. Since I don’t like the way GmailStatus‘ menu item looks, and Gee! doesn’t quite do it for me either, I was a bit concerned that I wasn’t going to find a good solution.

My next thought was that maybe someone had created an RSS or Atom feed for GMail, so I searched around. After not finding much, one result caught my eye that mentioned something about GMail having Atom feeds. I went over to GMail and sure enough, if you point your newsreader at the Atom feed, you’ll get a feed of your new mail messages. Goodbye menubar items! I do feel a little silly since the Atom feeds have been around since at least October of last year, but oh well.

More Delicious Than Ever

When I started using del.icio.us, I decided I wanted to use it to manage the linklog for my site. However, I wasn’t satisfied with using an RSS feed to put the most recent links on the frontpage. I wanted to have browsable archives, which meant that I needed my links stored locally on my server. In spite of some extensive searching, I wasn’t able to find an existing del.icio.us to MySQL mirroring tool. Thus, MySQLicious was born.

If synching del.icio.us bookmarks into a MySQL database sounds useful, then MySQLicious might be for you. Check out the MySQLicious project page for downloads and documentation.

Some Followup

March 19th, 2005Geeking Out / Mac / Software2 Comments

In the recent and not-so-recent past, I’ve left a few posts hanging with no resolution. This is an attempt to rectify that situation.

The Speakers I asked for advice on buying the Logitech Z-2200. After Ryan’s strong encouragement, I went ahead and got them. It’s been a very good choice that I’ve been extremely happy with — in more than one way. Not only are they incredibly kickass speakers, but I ended up getting them for free. After ordering and sending in my rebate request, Amazon credited me $50, saying that Logitech wasn’t going to be able to honor the rebate. Then a few weeks later I got the rebate check in the mail.

NewsFire When I first discovered NewsFire, I thought it was incredible, and compared to NetNewsWire 1.x, it is. However, after NNW 2 came out, NewsFire got kicked back off my dock in a hurry. I find NNW to be faster, more powerful, and easier to use. The only feature that I miss from NewsFire is the auto-discovery of feeds for the current site in Safari. Ranchero… you listening?
