The Better to Hear You With

October 16th, 2004Geeking Out / News

I’ve decided that I need to get some new speakers for my computer. Since I’m not a gamer and I don’t watch movies at my desk, I don’t need surround sound, so I’m looking for a good set of 2.1s. After some looking around and reading reviews, I’m torn between the Logitech Z-2200 and the Klipsch ProMedia GMX A-2.1. Even though the Klipschs look totally cool, many of the reviews mention issues with hiss, which isn’t so cool. Plus the Logis currently have a $50 rebate. If anybody has any advice, I’d appreciate it!

Update: I saw the Klipschs at the Apple store today and didn’t like the sound too much, and since the Logitechs have gotten great reviews, are on sale, and are recommended by RyanHarne.com, I’ll be ordering them shortly.

The Logitech pair are wonderful. When I was in the market for new computer speakers, I browsed everything up and down, checked online reviews, and, most importantly, listened to every candidate at BestBuy.
Klipsch are clearly more targetted to a gaming audience, their internal equalization and resonance has a metallic timbre. The subwoofers they produce are made to withstand immense volumes and power, but the quality of the bass is compromised.
Logitech really does make wonderful computer speakers. Especially for audio playback, the pairing of the tweeters and woofer are selected wonderfully and no frequency overpowers the rest. The tweeters sound clear but not cutthroat and the subwoofer promotes the lower frequencies without distortion.
But really do check them out yourself, don't take my expert-time-tested advice :)

    I am teh uber-audio-dork.

you're damn right they have my recommendation.
i assumed the $50 rebate was off of something like $150…but then i checked the amazon link. woah those speakers for $50 are a steal.
    anyways, enjoy :)
