O Eat Your Cherries, Mary
December 19th, 2004 • Music / Randomness
Today at church, the choir sang a very strange song. It’s called The Cherry Tree Carol, and is supposedly a traditional English carol. Here are the words:
Joseph was an old man, And an old man was he, When he married Mary In the land of Galilee.
And as they were walking Through an orchard so good, Where were cherries and berries As red as any blood.
O then bespoke Mary, With words both meek and mild, ‘Pluck me one cherry, Joseph; For that I am with child.’
‘Go to the tree then, Mary, And it shall bow to thee; And you shall gather cherries By one, by two, by three.
Then bowed down the highest tree Unto our Lady’s hand, ‘See,’ Mary cried, ’see, Joseph, ‘I have cherries at command.’
Then Mary plucked a cherry, As red as any blood, Then Mary went she homewards All with her heavy load.
I get the uncomfortable feeling that there is some sort of weird sexual innuendo going on here. Or do I just have a dirty mind? What is the point of this song? Discuss.

It's easy. God popped Mary's cherry and she gave birth to God's blood line.

You go to church? Color me shades of rainbow. Are those Pissin' Palians (as my grandmother likes to call Episcopalians) a hoot? They're a dirty bunch. I had an Episcopal priest once talk to our youth group about circumcision and one of the girls wondered what it was and he offered to show us.
"I've gotcha" Said the bishop to the choir boy.

That is the most F'ed up song I have ever heard in a church. Kudos to the writer.
