Bryan is a little tipsy right now. Here’s the story he just wrote for me (I would scan it if I had a scanner):
I am |Adan and I smeelll like GBoooof
No, that’s not the story. That’s Bryan coming over and telling me he would type it for me.
Here’s the story:
Once upon a time there was a gay boy named Adam. He was so gay even Michael Jackson didn’t invite him to Neverland Ranch! This made poor little gay Adam very sad. So he went to Honduros (sic) to become a pig and cheese farmer. He had beautiful cheese bushes.
Indeed.

Yesterday was my first day of work in almost two months, and overall I enjoyed it. I only missed being able to lay around the house all day a little bit. Having a job to keep me busy is a Good Thing for sure.
Everybody at work is super nice and made me feel very welcome. I think I’m going to enjoy it. Probably the biggest downside is the commute — it’s about half an hour, which is exceedingly different from my previous five minute walk to work. On the plus side, I do get to listen to audiobooks during the drive, so it’s not a total loss.
Time for me to go get ready for the work!
Oh, one more thing: this lamp is soooo totally cool and creepy. I love it.

Time for some more Mac geekery. On friday Growl 0.5 was released. Growl is a unified notification system for OS X that I’ve been using for a while now and it’s very cool. I do have to admit that it’s not the prettiest thing in the world right now, but better display plugins are coming.
Here are some of my favorite uses for Growl:
Adium supports Growl for buddy signed on/off notifications and such. Follow these instructions to enable it.
iTunes via Quicksilver. QS can use Growl for its notifications… but there’s currently a little work to get it going. First you have to change QS’s feature mode to Beta, then visit the plugins page from within Quicksilver. Install the Growl and iTunes plugins. Then under Actions, set Notification to use GrowlHelperApp and under iTunes, turn on recent track monitoring and track notifications. I’m using QS for iTunes track changes, so I get a notification whenever a new track comes up. (GrowlTunes does the same thing, but it’s an external program and I always have QS running anyway.)
Email notification. I use a script instead of GrowlMail because it generates a notification for every message showing the sender and subject, rather than just a notification for each account that gets new mail (you can find a sample script in the Growl download). In Mail, go into Preferences, then Rules. Create a new rule set up like this:
Last but not least, I have to pimp my CallVantage dialer, which will generate a Growl notification when dialing a number.

I discovered NewsFire today and it’s already kicked NetNewsWire off my dock. NewsFire’s minimalist interface is full of lickable goodness and simplicity. The biggest lack I’m currently feeling is some sort of badge on the icon indicating the number of unread items, but hopefully that will come in time. It’ll be interesting to see how NewsFire competes with NetNewsWire 2.0 once that is out. For now though, NewsFire is the newsreader for me.

Really, there was much more of the latter than the former this weekend, since we played exactly zero games of cards. However, Julie did mention that she liked watching poker (Texas Hold ‘Em only), so that counts. Sure it does.
Being able to spend time with Julie was so good. Even though I’m very glad I made the decision to move to Ohio, there have been times that it’s been lonely since I don’t have any friends other than my Bryan here. Having someone to hang out with made it really clear to me how badly I need to get to know more local people. Getting a job should be a step in that direction.
Speaking of which, I’m pretty optimistic about the job for which I interviewed on friday. I’m really hoping to find out tomorrow morning that they want me. The job is at the help desk for a major greeting card company, and it seems that it might be a good fit for me.
I think Julie is going to post some pictures from the weekend once she’s settled back home, so I’ll let you know when that happens.

Not yet, but hopefully soon! I have an interview tomorrow for a possible placement through the consulting firm. In the category of “other things that are happening tomorrow,” Julie is coming to visit! I’m really looking forward to seeing her again, since it’s been approximately forever since we’ve seen each other.
So all kinds of good things are happening tomorrow.

And it certainly is raining right now. Not only are we getting poured upon by the remnants of Frances, but I’m getting what seems like a downpour of interviews. Today, I had my interview with the consulting firm, and that went awesome. This afternoon, the consulting firm called and said they had a potential placement of a helpdesk job for me, so I have an interview for that on Friday. Then a (different) recruiter called me and said he had a company that would like to interview me next week for a helpdesk job. So after not hearing from anybody for a month, I get two interviews in a week. Yay!
In other news, Bryan is very excited about the new toilet paper.

Here’s a smidgen of news: I have another interview tomorrow. Hopefully this one goes better than the last. I mean, the last one wasn’t bad, but they were looking for someone with more programming experience than me. This is for a helpdesk type job.
So my fingers are crossed.
