Shortness

Update on my mom: she came home at around 3:30 this afternoon and is doing much better. Yay for that. :-)

Unfortunately, since she didn’t get out until then, I didn’t get to see her because I had to leave around 11 am to get back here for staff meeting this afternoon. I listened to Eiffel 65 and Coldplay in the car… plenty of fun singing along and no falling asleep.

Um… and I don’t think I have much else to say right now. Other than I need to go to sleep.

The Weekends Are Our Future

August 18th, 2003Friends / Movies / News5 Comments

As I write this, I’m still not home. On Sunday night. When I’m supposed to be at work at 8:00 tomorrow this morning. I’m at my parents’ because I came to do work for the company I still do IT consulting for (I was their IT department during high school). After a ridiculously long time, they finally have gotten new computers, so I came to set everything up. A weekend should be plenty of time, right? How about not.

First, there were über problems with the wireless. The computers would connect but after a few minutes, everything would stop working. After about six hours of screwing with everything, it turns out that the router just needed to be switched from channel six to eleven and everything was happy. Gah. (Well, the router’s firmware also had to be upgraded but that wasn’t the main problem). Since just getting the network working took most of yesterday (and almost made me miss movieing with Ryan — more on that in a bit), I had to do more work today. Even though everything isn’t done, we finally decided at about midnight:30 that it was time to wrap things up. The new computers are functional enough for them to get done what they need to do and I’ll make a return visit in a couple weeks.

As if all that wasn’t enough, last night my mom had a bad migraine and it didn’t go away after she went to sleep. Around five this morning, dad took her to the hospital. They decided to keep her overnight and have had her on some strong meds. With all the work, I haven’t had a chance to go visit her. Hopefully I’ll get to see her tomorrow morning before I leave for the drive back… last I heard she should be getting out tomorrow morning.

That was the not-so-good stuff from the weekend. Now for the better stuff. Hanging out with Ryan is always fun (at least from what I’ve experienced the few times I’ve gotten to do so). Last nigth, we went for coffee (and food for me) and then to see Seabiscuit. The movie was kind of a good meh. It had some neat subtle parts where rather than spell everything out, events were simply implied or hinted, but as the film dragged on toward the end, I began to wonder of those subtle parts were just edits to keep the movie from being four hours long (kind of like that sentence). And if there’s one thing Seabiscuit taught me, it’s… well, something or other about the Future.

By far the best part of this weekend was getting to talk to my brother. Those of you who know me well understand that this is a huge step for me. He and I have never been particularly close, but after I came back from day two of computer hell (ok, it wasn’t quite that bad ;-) we ended up talking for about two hours. It was really good, and I got some stuff out in the open that needed to be talked about. So yay for connecting. :-)

So now it’s gosh-darn-diciously late, and I should get in bed. Get better mommy!

This wallpaper by mandolux is amazing.

Small Dog’s new ad campaign is cute. It’s a spoof of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (great show, btw) called Mac Eye for the Wintel Guy. Hehe. (Thanks to Jeremiah for the link).

Much thanks to Jenni for hooking me up with the free Dido cd. I’m really enjoying it already. Honestly Ok and My Life are both beautiful, and of course the singles that were released to radio are good.

I definitely need to give props to Matt for showing me css Zen Garden. There are some amazing designs there and they all have the source code easily available. Some favs: Zunflower, prêt-à-porter, RPM, and Costal Breeze. Browse the full list of designs yourself.

Ok, time for (late) dinner with Ney, Josh, and his bf (that’s boyfriend, not the other meaning of bf, for those down with the lingo) and somebody else they know. Should be fun/entertaining.

This Time

Not too much to report. Work is hella busy of course… getting ready for students returning is always insane. The next two or three weeks will be teh suck, but I’ll probably build up some comp time. And that means time off later. Yay for that anyway.

Mainly I want to send out big hugs to my Bryan. He’s going through some tough stuff right now, so send him some love.

I guess that’s pretty much it. Lots of unrealized thoughts/feelings swirling around, but nothing I can articulate much of yet. I just want to feel safe in my own skin…

A Love Letter

Dear Person Who Came Up With The Idea Of Installing Faucets On Water Fountains,

I love you. Every day you bring such joy into my life. And by "you" I mean "your invention," and by "joy" I mean "water," and by "life" I mean "water bottle." Never mind that. I love you. Will you marry me?

Love always,
adam

Hanging Around the Life

I’ve now seen Pirates of the Caribbean twice, and it was definitely enjoyable both times. Of course, my enjoyment of the second time might have been helped along by the appletini from Cheddar’s… nah, it’s just a dang good movie. Dave was right in saying that Johnny Depp makes the movie. Jack Sp… i mean Captain Jack Sparrow is just the right blend of suavity and ridiculousness.

As of Friday night, I am no longer a Cheddar’s virgin, and I’m very happy about that. We did have to wait almost an hour for our table, but the food was worth the wait. I had catfish with Cajun spices on seasoned rice, cole slaw, and carrots. Oh, and the oh-so-yummy appletini. (We also went for lunch on Saturday… we just can’t get enough).

Saturday we went to "the place where the stores live" (also known as the mall) and did the shopping thing. I got two cds: Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head and The Polyphonic Spree - The Beginning Stages of…. I’m very much enjoying both so far. If you haven’t heard of The Polyphonic Spree, well, go check them out. They describe themselves as "a choral symphonic pop band," which is pretty accurate. It’s good stuff.

I also got a shirt from Express Men and a pair of jeans from Old Navy. We did a lot of other shopping too… almost too much (note I only said almost).

That night we went out on the pier because the moon was out. Wow. Such beauty. The night was solemn, with a quieting effect on all four of us. After a while, each person silently got up and walked back to the house. The feeling was similar to the end of a church service, only much more beautiful.

Afterwards, it was out to Starbuck’s for hanging out with Michael. He is definitely one of the most fun people I know. It’s too bad he lives all the way out of state (or so he seems to think — yes Michael, you can drive three hours and still be in Virginia).

Despite the lack of beaching, it still was a good trip. We’ve got some beachness lined up for September, so all is not lost in that department.

So there’s a hefty helping of random anecdotes from my recent life. This week, it’s back to work, with no days off. How ever will I survive after last week’s mere two days of work?

So I’m here in the Circuit City using Toshiba’s 17" laptop… and it sucks. Hard. It’s forever thick, and it looks like it’s been painstakingly engineered thrown together. Some parts are silver, some are white, some are matte blck, and some are shiny black. And the outside is blue. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

We’ve had fun so far on the trip. No beach today because of the less than perfect weather. BUT we’ve done a buttload of shopping and of course I’ve bought stuff because I have an inability to not buy things while shopping.

There have been other adventures as well that I’ll write about later once I get back online with my good 17" laptop. :-) Man, this laptop is horrible. I guess the screen is nice, but that’s about it.

Well, it’s time to head off for more fun times in Tide Vegas.

Do I have to do a recap of the last few days? I guess I will if it’s demanded of me, but I don’t feel like writing it right now. I really haven’t been in much of a blogging mood recently. It’s not that life hasn’t been happening… because it has… it’s just that anything I write is either going to be "we saw such-and-such movies and watched so-and-so on tv" or "I’m not talking about this and that" and neither choice is very exciting, is it? Hm.

Today I leave for a Tidewater trip with my favorite locals, Courtney, Dan, and Lynley. This should be hella fun. I still need to pack… I should get going on that.

…and the chords are just a prayer up past the stars.

This is just a short update to let you know that I’m not dead. :-) I’ve been too busy having fun with Jeremiah to write anything. Unfortunately, Adam’s plan to come up fell through, so we’ve missed him. We did get to video chat with him this morning to say hi though, so at least there was that.

That’s all I feel like writing at the moment. :-)

I Am the Cleaning King

As Steve put it when he got home, the apartment is "immaculate." I pretty much cleaned the whole place except for Steve and Andy’s rooms. I love the feeling of sitting back and knowing that everything is clean and in order.

Totally unrelated, I very much appreciated Matt’s words on gay marriage. It’s a good rant.

This is going to be an exciting week. Jeremiah comes tomorrow and then Adam arrives sometime Tuesday. As if that wasn’t enough, on Friday, Ney, Dan, Lynley, and I are heading to the Tidewater area for a weekend of debauchery fun. Yay for taking time off work!
